Wix or a web designer: which is better for a small business?
Wix gives you a lot of freedom. Freedom is great until you are the one making every decision.
What Wix is like to use
Wix is a drag-and-drop builder. You can put most things almost anywhere on the page, which is fun for people who like to design and a lot of rope for people who do not.
It has a free plan with Wix branding and a Wix web address, and paid plans for using your own domain. Check the current plan details on Wix's own site.
Where it gets harder
With total freedom comes total responsibility. Spacing, text sizes and how a page looks on a phone are your job, and it is easy to end up with a site that looks fine on your laptop and cramped on a phone.
Local search basics still need setting up by hand: page titles, headings, your service area and a map.
Questions to ask before you start
Can you use your own domain on the plan you want? What will it cost at renewal? Can you move your content out if you change your mind?
Keep your domain in your own name and keep copies of your text and pictures.
Where we fit
We plan the layout around your trade, write the text with you and check it on a phone. Fixed prices start at £199 on the packages page.
If you enjoy designing, Wix is a fair choice. If you would rather hand it over and review the result, that is what a fixed-price package is for.
Questions to ask before you decide
- Which plan do I need to use my own domain?
- What is the renewal price?
- Who checks every page on a phone?
- Where will my text and pictures be saved if I leave?
Common questions
Can I use my own domain with Wix?
Paid plans are designed for connecting your own domain. Check which plan you need on Wix's own pricing page, as plans change.
Is a Wix site good enough for a tradesperson?
It can be, if it is set up properly: clear services, a phone number at the top, your area and a map. The tool matters less than the content and setup.
